Satan and the atheists think that this younger generation is easily duped. But, this generation is not as dumb as they think.  No matter how hard the New Atheists try to deny and kill the Godward wonder in all of us, with their “Selfish gene,” every man has within him a God shaped hole in his heart that only God can fill. As St. Augustine said: “My soul was restless until it rested in you Oh God.”

Just as the modernist, God killing philosophers of a couple hundred years ago wrongly called the  medieval ages the “dark ages” and just as wrongly called their new era the age of “enlightenment.” these new wanna-be philosophers of today  like to call themselves the “brights.” I’m sorry guys, your pride is showing.  The new atheists can’t hold a candle to their smarter atheist predecessors.”  They are not nearly as “bright.”

They are very clever, but they are far from honest in their rhetoric. They are like the defense lawyer who twists the laws and spins the facts to get his guilty client free.  Socrates would rip them apart with the same cordial buzz saw that he sliced Gorgias up with.  They use rhetoric, misinformation and sarcasm to ridicule the position of theists. But their arguments are horribly flawed and easily defeated. They are flawed in their logic, assumptions and ambiguous terminology.

For example, they have found it necessary to even falsely redefine the term atheist.  The classic definition is “one who does not believe in the existence of God” but they have come to realize that this definition forces a burden of proof on them that they cannot bear. In order to escape this, they have fuzzied up the definition of the term atheist.

They now say “Oh I guess you underlings did not know that the real definition of an atheist is just “someone who does not see any evidence for the existence of God.”  In their ambiguous terminology they try to throw off the requirement that is on them to prove that God does not exist and they just stand with arms folded saying to God “Prove it.  Show me God under a microscope.”

Isn’t this the same way that Satan tempted Jesus when he said “Let’s do a God experiment. Throw yourself off the temple wall and let’s just see if God saves you.”

Jesus fought back “It is written, Thou shall not put The Lord they God to the test.”(VS)   Not so fast “bright” eyes. If you are an atheist, you still have a burden of proof.  Stop playing dodge ball.

Anton Flew was one of the greatest atheist voices of the last century. He was a friend of C.S. Lewis at Cambridge and was part of their philosophical society that met every week.  Their creed was to “follow truth wherever it would lead them.”  For C.S. Lewis, this creed led him to stop being an atheist and he became a Christian and one of the greatest apologists of the last century.  But for Anton, the son of a pastor, his honest pursuit of truth led him to become an atheist and more than that one of the leading spokesman for that position.

But something remarkable happened.  Under the weight of the preponderance of the growing scientific evidence in regards to the improbability or better said the impossibility that the precision of the Big Bang was just an accident and the improbability that DNA could just accidentally happen, and how improbable it was, the limited time that evolution has had to do its dance with chance, that mankind could evolve.

His pursuit of truth eventually resulted in his becoming a theist around 2003. Having come to believe that God was behind all of this creative design, he stated that, if he was to accept a religion, the one that made the most sense to him was Christianity. We hope that he had that conversion before he died in 2007.

If you read his old writings, for the most part, there is an integrity. There is an honest representation of things. There are no smoke and mirrors, just perhaps a haze of confusion in his own reasoning. He pursued truth and as St. Thomas believed, anyone who humbly does so must eventually find God.   Unlike the modern atheists who seem to have an “axe to grind,” he was just ‘sharpening his sword of truth” until truth finally pierced him.

St Thomas Aquinas gave us his five ways, from reason alone, for proving that there is a God.  One of my favorite surfers in the world and the long time Professor of Philosophy at Boston College; Peter Kreeft, adds fifteen more arguments from reason for the existence of God.

One of Professor Kreeft’s reasons is the “argument from beauty.”  He simply says “There is a Bach, therefore there is a God.”  GK Chesterton talks about the wonder of the art found in the Caves of early man. It distinguishes us from the animals.  Look out beyond Plato’s cave.  Natural selection and survival of the fittest make no sense when it comes to beauty.  How did “evolution” alone give man a sense of wonder and love and appreciation for beauty.

I have a couple more arguments that I would like to add.  One is my argument from Tropical Fish.” Have you ever snorkeled in a tropical lagoon?  Sea horses, rainbow fish and the Hawaiian state fish the Humuhumunukukuapua’a could only exist if the operative law of evolution was “survival of the weirdest” or perhaps could it be that God has a wonderful sense of humor and that He shows this in His creation.

I have one more argument from reason that also I also mentioned to Peter Kreeft. His total silence after I said it was an indication to me of how totally awed he was by my amazing wisdom.   I call it “The argument from chocolate.”  Chocolate exists, I have taste buds that can savor its divine goodness and therefore, there must be a God.

I have faith in the millennialist generation that they will soon find the black holes in the arguments of the New Atheists.  This will be a hopeful development but there is a great  danger that the pendulum will swing them into false spirituality. The media parades out the knuckle draggers of Christianity and presents their views as being representative of our faith.  They will still dismiss Christianity as being strictly for mindless dolts.

Atheists don’t want to admit that it was a Catholic Priest who developed the scientific method or that it can only be in the context of a universe created by one God in whom “there is no shadow of change” that we can rely on the constancy of the conclusions of a scientific method.  Prior to that, the belief of of pantheon of melodramatic God’s let no room for predictive science resting on the laws of nature.

When the millennialist generation finally shakes off the pride, confusion and peer pressure of the “God is Dead” regime, we must be ready with an answer for the “reason” of our hope. (VS) For it is right at that moment that the millennialists come to realize that the apostles of atheism have failed them and they discover that the emperor is not wearing any clothes that God will provide you with an appointment to bump into them. We all need to be agile enough to approach them first with reason.

We have a great harvest open to us right now.  In this era of the “New Silliness,” we have a great opportunity to win people to Christ.  Catholics are more prepared than anyone to do the reaping.  As St John Paul II wrote in “Fide et Ratio”  “it is the two wings of faith and reason that allow one’s soul to soar towards truth.” With both faith and reason, we can win their hearts and minds.

The neo-atheists are far from “bright”, as they like to refer to themselves. Their brilliance flickers like a candle with the slightest breath of reason or in challenging their “facts.”

Do not be intimidated by them.  There will be a rebirth of cool and you are on the championship team. The Catholic Church is the longest existing organization in history.  Did not Jesus proclaim when he gave the keys to the kingdom to St Peter: “The gates of hell will not prevail against it?”(VS)  Gates don’t attack warriors.  Warriors attack gates.  We are on the offense.

We are Catholics.  We have been the reigning champions of reason and faith for two thousand years.  We have a quiver full of arrows to pierce their arguments. A Catholic with a well formed faith is more than up to the challenge of bringing someone into the faith.  Besides that, the Holy Spirit will be there to inspire both us and them when they open up to dialogue.

The New atheists ridicule Christians in order to categorize, marginalize and then minimize us.  They make us out to be backwards superstitious dolts who think that the earth is only seven thousand years old and who have bought into a hand me down dogma from our parents.

They cannot understand that it takes an intelligent thinking person to “Go Deep” with God. GK Chesterton was a Catholic not a fundamentalist and he hung Clarence Darrow, the famous prosecutor of the “monkey” trial out to dry. GK’s hero Father Brown detective novel exposed the murderer masquerading as a priest who said we don’t need reason, we only need faith.  He knew by that statement that he was not catholic.

Have they never exposed themselves to the beautiful minds of St Augustine and St.Thomas. They have just read the misinformation of their false apostles.  St. Augustine wrote that a belief formed without reasoned consideration is empty and without real meaning because it is based on emotion.

I recently interviewed Matt Fradd on my Deep Adventure Radio show.  I almost fell out of my chair when he quipped “I did not know that the new definition of atheism is “I am smarter than you.”  He nailed the superiority complex that so many of the disciples of “belief in unbelief” have.

Here is a sampling of some of that arrogance from the leading atheist  Richard Dawkins; “Religious belief is a virus that infects inferior genes.” “Religion is not only a form of infantile regression – it’s an especially pernicious kind of insanity.”  “Teaching religion to your children is a form of child abuse.”  Dawkins and his crowd really do believe that last statement.  Would they, if they could, send child protective services into Christians homes to take their children in to protective custody?

Richard Dawkins and his ilk believe that nothing exists but this material world.  As he skips among the tulips he sings his favorite song Madonna’s “I’m living in a material world and I am a material girl.”

It’s seems, that for now, it is “cool” to be an atheist and that it is weird and even twisted and evil to be a Christian.  But I have a confidence in this younger generation.  They will come to a point when with they reject the silliness of the neo-atheists. They are going to start searching for real answers.

Devout Russian Orthodox, Dosteoyevky lamented the state of a man who forsakes belief in God: “If God does not exist, everything is permissible and as a result man is forlorn, because neither within him nor without does he find anything to cling to. He can’t start making excuses for himself.”

Devout atheist Nietzsche said it even better as he describes deicide:  “The madman jumped into the midst of them and pierced them with his eyes. ‘Whither is God?’ he cried ‘I will tell you. We have killed him – you and I.  All of us are murderers.  But how did we do this?  How could we drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What were we doing when we unchained the earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving?  Away from all suns?  Are we not plunging continually?  Backward, sideward, forward.  Is there still any up or down? Are we straying, as through an infinite nothing?  Do we feel the breath of mighty empty space? Has it not become colder? Is not the night continually closing in on us?  Do we need to light lanterns in the morning?  Do we hear nothing as yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we smell nothing as of yet of the divine decompositions?  Gods to decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him.

How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives; who will wipe this blood off of us?  What water is there for us to clean ourselves?”

He fell into insanity upon seeing someone mercilessly beat a horse. He muttered, at that moment, his last sane words: “Mother, I am and idiot.” He lived his last eleven years in an insane asylum and then he died.  Nietzsche is dead.

The “enlightenment” atheist philosopher Jean Paul Sartre  “God does not exist and we have to face all the consequences of this…It is very distressing that god does not exist, because all possibilities of finding values in a heaven of ideas disappears long with Him..- there can no longer an a priori Good since there is no infinite and  perfect consciousness to think it.  Nowhere is it written that the Good exists, that we must be honest, that we must not lie; because we are on a plane where there is only men.”   His last words upon his death; “I failed.”

Thomas Hobbes last words were  “It is my turn to take a leap into the darkness.”

David Hume another of the enlightened cried out on his death “I am in flames!”

Voltaire’s nurse said “For all the money in Europe, I would not want to see another  unbeliever die! All night long he cried for forgiveness.”

Saying it another way, to paraphrase a conversation that I had with Peter Kreeft, ” A happy atheist is a shallow atheist.”  In other words, if you have really thought through your coming annihilation you have nothing to be happy about.

St Paul wrote of these so called philosophers “always coming to knowledge but never coming to truth.” (VS) They are titillated and tantalized by religion like the Greek god Tantalus but never coming to a true vibrant faith; never coming to a knowing of God in the depth of their being.

Jesus spoke of men who are so puffed up in their own intellect and pride of life.  “I give you praise to you Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, you have revealed them unto the childlike.  Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will.  All things have been handed down to me by my Father.  No one knows the Son except the Father and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal Him.” (Mathew 11:25)

Jesus spoke of them; “They have ears to hear but do not hear, they have eyes, but they do not see.” Mathew 13:13-17

Moses laid it out simply  “I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse; therefore choose life that you and your descendants might live, loving the Lord your God, obeying his voice, and cleaving to him; for that means life to you.”(VS)

God has placed in each of us a sense of wonder and a silent invitation that causes us to reach out to him. There is a gift of faith in each man’s soul but we silence it.  We hush it because of the cares and worries of the world, we slam the door shut the door on hope because we would rather wallow in self-pity because of pain, hurt and betrayal in our lives. We slam the door shut because we want what we want when we want it.  We want to be our own god. In our spiritual pride we to try to hide from God like Adam did.

If there is no God then you are God.

So now He awaits our response to His secret love letters.  As in Song of Solomon, He is like one hiding behind the lattice calling out “Come away with me my beloved” He calls but only shows Himself to those that desire Him. As Paschal said.  “He leaves just enough evidence of Himself so that those who long for Him can find him and hides Himself just enough so that those who don’t want to find Him wont.”

We all can hear him calling from my our inmost heart.  Give to God what he has due from you. Love Him “with all your heart, soul, strength and mind.” (Vs)

Then you can smile at God as He smiles back at you and say Psalm 16:5 “As for me, in justice I shall behold your face; I shall be filled with a vision of your glory.”
